Medical society giving 3 scholarships

A major in health care a must

The La Plata Medical Society again has three $1,000 scholarships for the 2014-15 school year for applicants from La Plata, Montezuma or Archuleta counties.

Applicants must major in some field of health care and must intend to return to the area to work when they graduate, said John Snyder, the executive director of The Durango Network, which provides services to medical practitioners.

Scholarships can be used at any university, Snyder said. The deadline for applying is July 15.

“The scholarship program goes way back,” Snyder said. “There were a couple years when they weren’t offered for administrative reasons.”

But the society got back in the groove last year, he said, when there were 14 applicants for three scholarships. Two went to Durango residents, the third to a resident of Pagosa Springs.

Applications are made at www.laplatamedicalsociety.org . Winners will be announced at the society’s annual meeting on Sept. 24 at the DoubleTree Hotel.
