Mercy again earns Medicare 5-star rating for quality

Mercy is only hospital in Colorado to receive highest rating

In new ratings released on Dec. 19, Mercy Regional Medical Center was again recognized by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) with a five-star rating for overall hospital quality. Mercy received its first five-star rating for quality from CMS last July, when CMS first began using the star rating system.

Mercy was again the only hospital in Colorado to receive a five-star rating. Nationally, only 83 hospitals-just two percent-received a five-star rating. No hospitals in New Mexico or Utah received a five-star rating, and only one Arizona hospital, Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, received five stars.

"Consistently providing high-quality care requires the focus of every person at Mercy," said Mercy Regional Medical Center CEO Tom Gessel. "I am grateful to our providers and staff who do this every day. They treat our patients with compassion and respect, follow best practices, and ensure the safety of those who entrust us with their care."

The overall hospital quality rating includes up to 57 quality measures from seven categories, including mortality, safety of care, readmissions, patient experience, effectiveness of care, timeliness of care, and efficient use of medical imaging.

Overall, 3,629 facilities across the US and 51 hospitals in Colorado were rated by CMS. More than 900 hospitals did not receive ratings because they did not meet the minimum reporting thresholds.
