Mercy Regional Medical Center received two national distinctions in quality excellence from Healthgrades, the 2016 Patient Safety Excellence Award and the 2016 Outstanding Patient Experience Award. Mercy was identified for providing excellent performance in safeguarding patients from serious, potentially preventable complications, and for providing a positive experience for patients during their hospital stay, according to Healthgrades, a leading online resource for information about physicians and hospitals.
Mercy is the only hospital in the Four Corners region to receive the Healthgrades Outstanding Patient Experience Award for the last eight years in a row (2009-2016), and one of only 99 hospitals in the nation (out of 3,536 that were evaluated) to be recognized by Healthgrades in 2016 for both patient safety and patient experience excellence. Mercy is among only two percent of hospitals in the nation to receive both awards.
"A positive experience for our patients involves receiving safe, reliable care and optimal outcomes," said Dr. William Plauth, Mercy's chief medical officer. "We are very proud of our staff and providers for offering such excellent and compassionate care to our patients, as well as a supportive environment for all families. Receiving this national recognition acknowledges that Mercy goes above and beyond for those we serve, and strives to do this every day."
Patient Safety
On average, patients treated in hospitals receiving Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence awards were:
. 0.2 percent less likely to experience an accidental puncture or laceration during a procedure, compared to patients treated at non-recipient hospitals.
. 44.2 percent less likely to experience a collapsed lung due to a procedure or surgery in or around the chest,
. 54.4 percent less likely to experience catheter-related blood stream infections, and
. 50.4 percent less likely to experience pressure sores or bed sores acquired in the hospital, compared to patients treated at non-recipient hospitals.1
The awards were based on hospital data from 2012 - 2014.
Patient Experience
In addition to being recognized as one of Healthgrades 2016 Patient Safety Excellence Award recipients, Mercy also out-performed peer hospitals in patient experience.
Healthgrades evaluated patient experience performance by applying a scoring methodology to 10 measures, using data collected from a 32-question survey of the hospital's patients. The survey questions focus on patients' perspectives of their care in the hospital. Question topics range from cleanliness and noise levels in patient rooms to factors such as pain management and responsiveness to patients' needs. The measures also include whether a patient would recommend the hospital to friends or family.
