Mercy surgery team deserves accolades

I recently underwent surgery at Mercy Regional Medical Center to repair a 19-year-old hip joint apparatus that had broken apart. The procedure to repair or replace the device was scheduled for Aug. 16 with orthopedic surgeon Dr. Richard Lawton.

Unfortunately for me, the weeks leading up to the operation created enormous anxiety. Considering my age, the risks associated with anesthesia, the pain, the possible complications that could occur, or worse, I was more frightened than I had ever been.

And that brings me to the day of surgery and the TLC I received from the pre-op staff. My nurse, Bess, in particular, a true “angel of mercy,” gave me the encouragement I needed to alleviate some of the angst.

I also met Dr. Kyper, the anesthesiologist, by far one of the most sympathetic, empathetic, patient and warm physicians I have ever met. I knew I was in good hands and more of my anxiety was lifted.

After the procedure, I remember waking and feeling pretty comfortable and, yes, happy the surgery was behind me. I recognized the incredible care I received from the attentive, bright, kind and caring nursing staff, each of whom made my stay at Mercy feel like a vacation.

My thanks to nurses Emily, Verity, Gabe and Lauren: You are very special people.

For physical therapy at its best, thank you, Terry and Jen, for your wisdom and your expert help.

No wonder Mercy Regional has received accolades – they are well deserved.

Dr. Lawton, there are no words to explain how very grateful I am to you. You are obviously a highly-skilled surgeon who has been most accessible and very kind. You deserve an A-plus for bedside manner.
