Mercy’s endocrinology clinic to close

Durango Herald file

Mercy Regional Medical Center’s endocrinology clinic will close in May.

The endocrinology clinic at Mercy Regional Medical Center will close in May.

Dr. Gihan “Gigi” Dawood resigned her position at Centura Health Physician Group Southwest Endocrinology to pursue other opportunities, hospital spokesman David Bruzzese said in an email.

“We are helping patients establish care with endocrinologists who work elsewhere in the Centura Health system, and are also looking into potential telemedicine solutions that would help reduce the need for patients to travel for their endocrinology needs,” he said.

Endocrinologists treat patients with hormonal conditions such as those with diabetes or thyroid disorders.

Providers at Mercy Internal Medicine and Mercy Family Medicine could see some of Dawood’s current patients depending on their condition, he said.

Patients may also seek care from their current primary care providers, he said.

The nearest endocrinology clinic in the Centura Health system is in Lakewood.

“We will continue to evaluate demand for endocrinology services to determine if and when it may be possible to recruit another endocrinologist and reopen the clinic,” he said.
