Mesa Verde offers free guided hike

Mesa Verde National Park will offer a free guided hike from 10 a.m. to noon Friday along the Petroglyph Point Trail.

Participants will hike through piñon-juniper woodlands and learn about the birds that call Mesa Verde their winter home. Hikers will also encounter archaeological sites built hundreds of years ago.

The guided hike is free, but advance sign-up is required. There is a limit of 20 people. Children should be at least 7 years old. Participants should dress warmly, bring water and be prepared to hike 2.5 miles in winter conditions. They are encouraged to bring a bird field guide and binoculars. The hike will begin at the Chapin Mesa Archaeological Museum, about a 45-minute drive from the park entrance.

For more information and to sign up, call the Chapin Mesa Archaeological Museum at (970) 529-4631. The park entrance fee is $15. For more information about Mesa Verde National Park, visit www.nps.gov/meve.
