Mesa Verde tightens fire restrictions

The July 2002 Long Mesa Fire burns in Mesa Verde National Park.

Due to recent dry, hot and windy weather, fire danger has reached a new high and restrictions have increased at Mesa Verde National Park.

Open fires are prohibited for all areas inside the park, including fire rings at Morefield Campground, Chapin Mesa picnic area and all other areas contained within the park limits.Pressurized gas stoves and contained charcoal grills are permitted only at Morefield Campground and Chapin Mesa picnic area.Smoking is permitted only in enclosed vehicles and fireworks are prohibited in the park.Current restrictions will remain until fire danger at Mesa Verde becomes less severe. The lack of precipitation in the forecast suggests that fire bans will be in place for an extended amount of time.
