A Miller Middle School student recently donated 100 pairs of soccer cleats to Tanzania.
Kenzie Galloway, a seventh grader, spent a week collecting the shoes. The cleats were sent Monday to Mwanza, Tanzania, as part of the Health and Hope Foundation. Galloway learned she could help students in Mwanza, where soccer is popular but most kids can’t access cleats, through the foundation.
Galloway, a soccer player for the Durango Youth Soccer Association, set up bins for donations during the Durango Shootout, a three-day youth soccer tournament held last weekend. She received roughly 85 cleats during the tournament, with the rest coming from friends.
“The community of Durango really helped me with this project,” Galloway said. “It wasn’t just me.”
Galloway was first introduced to the Health and Hope Foundation when her neighbor, a volunteer with the organization, introduced herself to Galloway’s family when they moved to the neighborhood last year.
“I’m just one of those people who likes to help out,” Galloway said. “I heard of people needing some cleats, and I love soccer and helping people so I wanted to help out.”
