Crews work to clear the scene of a mobile home fire Friday in Kirtland, N.M.

One person died in a mobile home fire Friday in Kirtland, New Mexico.

Firefighters arrived about 7:40 a.m. to find about 75% of the mobile home engulfed in flames. Residents who had evacuated the home told firefighters one person remained inside.

“Crews made an initial attack on the fire and were able to knock the fire down to be able to perform a primary search,” Devin Neeley, spokesman for San Juan County, said in a news release. “During the course of the search of the structure, crews located an individual inside.”

The release goes on to say lifesaving measures were attempted, “however, the person was not able to be saved.”

No names were being released Friday afternoon.

Five other occupants of the residence were taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries. The fire was extinguished and crews were expected to stay in the area for cleanup for most of the day.

The home is considered a total loss and the fire is under investigation by the San Juan County Joint Fire and Explosion Investigation Task Force, including members of the San Juan County Fire Department and San Juan County Sheriff’s Office.
