Molas Pass road work suspended for weekend

A heavy equipment operator excavates the northbound lane of U.S. Highway 550 on Molas Pass two miles south of Silverton. The work is part of a project that will replace aging retaining walls (known as crib walls), which hold up the road on this high mountain pass.

The Colorado Department of Transportation will suspend road construction on Molas Pass on U.S. Highway 550 just south of Silverton through July 4.

On July 4, visitors arriving and leaving Silverton should anticipate traffic delays as hundreds of vehicles enter and leave town. Law enforcement wants motorists to avoid traveling northbound between Durango and Silverton from 9 p.m. to midnight July 4 to ease congestion so motorists leaving Silverton can more easily travel south.

During the weekend, portable traffic signals will be in place to direct traffic through the construction area on Molas Pass. Motorists traveling either direction should expect delays of about 7 minutes.
