A hard season on the hardwood came to a close Tuesday night for the Bayfield girls, who were defeated 52-28 at Monte Vista in one of the Intermountain League District Tournament's two play-in contests.
The Wolverines got eight points and five rebounds from junior forward Taylor Morris, and eight and four from sophomore guard Tiarra Christensen, but faced an uphill battle after falling behind 15-6 after one quarter. Getting four second-quarter points from both Terrise Sanchez and Danielle Chacon, the Lady Pirates' lead grew to 27-10 at halftime, and MVHS all but secured the victory by winning the third quarter 17-6.
Monte post Payton Cooper ended up the game's high scorer with 12 points, and she was joined in double figures by guard Faith Pacheco (10) and Lexi Wingert (10). Sanchez finished with eight, Mariah Barbosa had six Chacon four and Briana Villagomez two as MVHS, seeded third in the tourney bracket, improved to 15-5 overall.
Sophomore center/forward Courtney Bayles netted five points for #6 Bayfield (4-16), and freshman guard Tymbree Florian chipped in three. Senior guard Maddy Duran and junior guard Kyle Baker each had two points and grabbed four boards.
In Tuesday's other game, 4-seed Alamosa (now 8-12) entertained and ousted #5 Montezuma-Cortez (8-12) 34-21, making for semifinal pairings tonight in La Jara of #1 Pagosa Springs (19-0) versus AHS at 6:00 p.m., and event-hosting #2 Centauri (16-3) meeting MVHS at about 7:30.
CHS had downed BHS 60-31 last Thursday in Bayfield's regular-season/home finale, getting 25 points from senior guard Veronica Fringer and 11 each from senior forward Jordan Dunn and sophomore center Ember Canty. Bayles led the Lady Wolverines with 12, while Baker and senior forward Maddi Foutz each booked six.
