The Montezuma Creek Fire is 8 acres and 80 percent contained. The fire is burning on the Southern Ute Reservation south of Pagosa Springs. Fire crews expected to have it fully contained tonight, according to a press release from the Durango Interagency Type 3 Incident Management Team.
One small fire was detected Wednesday; it burned one-tenth of an acre and is fully contained.
There were 12 other fires in that area, including the Kerns, Madrid and Round Meadow fires. All of them are contained.
The Durango team has turned over command of the fires to the Southern Ute Agency Fire Management to handle final containment.
“We still have another four to six weeks of critical fire conditions before the monsoon season starts,” said Richard Gustafson, incident commander with the team. “We really need everyone’s help to be fire safe during this period of extreme drought and fire conditions.”
