Community tips help Sheriff’s Office identify the vehicle involved and a suspect; public still encouraged to look out for stolen items

After two burglaries at the same Colorado Highway 145 property last month, the Montezuma County Sheriff’s Office identified a suspect and located the vehicle involved in the incidents, which they described as a black 1990s Chevy SUV with two doors, a lift and oversized tires.

In a Facebook post, the sheriff’s office thanked citizens for providing tips and alerted the public that the owner of the vehicle – which changed hands since the incidents – is not believed to be involved.

Deputies responded twice in January to reported burglaries at a property in the 17,000 block of Colorado 145 near Dolores. The Sheriff’s Office estimated that the first burglary occurred around Christmas. The victim estimated that $2,080 in items, including a welder, welding gloves, a circular saw and two welding helmets, were taken.

The second call to deputies took place Jan. 26 and involved the theft of golf equipment, gaming systems and a virtual reality headset. Deputies noted damage to the door and door frame, indicating the thief forced entry in both incidents.

The Sheriff’s Office continues to search for the the stolen items and advises citizens to look out for them on Facebook Marketplace and in pawn shops. The office encourages anyone who recognizes the items to call Cortez dispatch’s nonemergency line at (970) 565‑8454 and reference case number MC26‑0011 or submit anonymous tips via the Crimewatch mobile app or website.

The full list of stolen items, along with photos of similar items, is posted on Facebook under the Montezuma County Sheriff’s Office account.
