Montrose golf gets best of Durango at Black Canyon

Demons second, seven shots back

The second leg of the Montrose Invitational wasn’t quite as nice to the Durango Demons as the first.

Durango High School’s boys golf team saw Anthony Flint win Thursday at Cobble Creek Golf Club in Montrose. He helped lead the Demons to a tie for first place with host Montrose, the three-time defending CHSAA Class 4A state champions. But Montrose would get the final word Friday when action shifted to Black Canyon Golf Course.

Montrose had a three-player total of 230 to beat the Demons by seven shots. Durango’s 237 was good for second, one stroke better than Eagle Valley.

For the first time this year, a Durango High School player did not finish as the individual winner in a tournament the Demons entered. Medalist honors Friday went to Josh Stouder, who shot a 2-over-par 72. It was an eagle on the par-5 No. 16 that sent Stouder to victory.

Montrose’s Jordan Jennings shot a 73 to take second, one shot ahead of Hayden Hart of Ouray.

Durango’s Levi Tichi, a winner Monday at Adobe Creek National Golf Club in Fruita, fired a 75 to place fourth. Flint shot a 76 to tie for fifth with Palisade’s Alex Morrall.

Conditions were tough for scoring Friday. Tichi had two birdies but also had two double bogeys. Flint, too, had a pair of birdies. He avoided any doubles but had eight bogeys on the scorecard, including on the final two holes.

Behind the two Durango juniors was senior Jacob Genualdi. He shot an 86 for a three-way tie for 21st. A.J. Folk put together a strong round for Durango with an 87 to tie for 26th. Luke Carlson rounded out the Demons with a 94 to tie for 38th.

Up next for the Demons is a trip Aug. 27 to Cortez to play at Conquistador Golf Club. The team will have another varsity qualifier tournament Tuesday before the event.
