Painted Hand ruin is on the National Register of Historic Places. The 800-year-old village is within Canyons of the Ancients National Monument.
Community members interested in protecting Canyons of the Ancients National Monument and other Bureau of Land Management lands are invited to apply for the Monument Site Stewardship Program.
Volunteer site stewards visit sites about four to six times each year, take photos annually and send monitoring reports to the program coordinator.
The program also offers cultural and archaeological education as well as field trips. Participants must be committed to site confidentiality and able to submit information electronically.
