Junior forward/guard Jackson Queen sank five three-pointers and scored a team-high 15 points Saturday in Pagosa Springs, but it wasn’t enough to keep the Bayfield boys’ 2021-22 season alive as Alamosa won the Intermountain League district basketball tournament’s third-place game 62-47.

Senior guard Isaac Ross nailed three threes, and junior forward/center Caden Wood one – BHS booked nine triples in all – as each registered 13 points in defeat. Junior guard/forward Lance Mazur logged four points, and junior forward Noah Chamblee two as the loss, coupled with a 59-41 semifinals loss to Centauri two nights before, left the Wolverines with a final record of 7-14 overall.

In the semifinal loss, CHS senior guard Baron Holman sank six three-pointers and totaled 20 points, and sophomore guard Chaz Holman scored 10 plus and dished out eight assists as the Falcons, who led 21-9 after one quarter and 36-24 at halftime, made do without senior guard Mason Claunch.

The Mean Moose improved to 13-8 and earned the No. 21 seed for Class 3A state tournament. They will next play No. 12 Salida (17-5) Friday in the first round of the 32-team bracket.

Both teams will travel to No. 5 seed Centauri (20-1). The Falcons defeated Pagosa 58-35 in the district championship and will first face No. 28 The Pinnacle (Federal Heights; 14-7) in the Round of 32.

Having edged Alamosa 44-41 in the district semis, Pagosa Springs (14-7) received the No. 13 seed and will play the No. 20 seed, Westminster-based The Academy (16-6), in the first round.
