First, I truly enjoy and appreciate The Durango Herald and all the great work done by its staff. I believe the Herald is a Durango treasure, and one that I hope continues for a long time.
This letter is to support a recent submission suggesting that it would be great if the Herald allowed comments to Letters to the Editor that are published digitally (“Enable online comments on editorials,” Herald, July 6). I believe the Herald responded that this can be antagonistic and divisive, and I get that.
Therefore, I would like to offer an alternative: How about some emoji response options? There can be a thumbs-up or down or agree or disagree option. There could also be the “insightful” option or the “care” option. This lets the writer know how his/her opinion was received by the public, and it lets those of us who want to respond in some way have this option without it starting a string of comments that might create unnecessary conflicts.
If anyone else agrees with this, please send your own letter to the editor to support this idea. At this time, this is the only way one can let the editors know you like this idea. Thanks again for all you do as a local news source.
