More than 1,000 residents have signed a petition asking that the Bayfield office of the La Plata County Clerk be kept open.
The La Plata County Commission, citing falling revenues from oil and gas production, announced the closure of the office this spring. The employees in Bayfield will be re-assigned to the county clerk’s office in Durango.
The petitions can still be signed at various locations in Forest Lakes, Vallecito, Bayfield and Ignacio, said Phyllis Ludwig, who organized the distribution of the petitions.
She and other residents will present the petitions to the commission at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the county administration office at 1101 East Second Ave. in Durango. There also is time on the agenda for county residents to address the issue.
