On July 2 coming back to Durango from Silverton, we noticed a motorhome accident about a mile south of the summit of Coal Bank Pass. Since there was no activity, it had probably happened sometime before we drove by. We took pictures and moved on.
July 8, I was by the same spot and the motorhome had been removed.
What concerns me now is the bags of trash and garbage left at the site: several trash bags, one or two full of used water bottles; a couple of bags of garbage with clothing items; and several panels from the motorhome, including the awning.
I don’t understand why this wasn’t picked up by DOT or the salvage crew. I know that in most places in Colorado, the fine for littering is $100 to $500. And that could be for tossing one bottle or paper towel out the window.
The longer it stays the more scattered it will become. And there’s a DOT work center only a few miles away at the Lime Creek Trailhead.
