Mountain Middle students to present poetry cafe

Sixth-grade students in Todd Macon’s humanities class at Mountain Middle School will host “Poetry Cafe: Voice and Power,” a night of poetry and performances from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 18, at the Henry Strater Theatre, 699 Main Ave.

Students will act as hosts, waiters, busboys, busgirls and cooks to serve poetry to guests with decorated “poetry delivery tubes” from a menu of their own creation, and they will perform original and popular poetry on stage.

Students analyzed poetry and studied poetic devices, such as imagery, metaphor, simile, symbolism, personification, rhyme scheme, mood, tone, alliteration and irony.

Also on display will be the exhibit “Burning Water” by Josh Dalley’s sixth-grade science class, which showcases a kinetic-artwork project focused on the structure of atoms, chemical bonds and the unique water molecule.
