In 1979 Santa Barbara, California, Dorothea Fields is a determined single mother in her mid-50s who is raising her adolescent son, Jamie, at a moment brimming with cultural change and rebellion. Dorothea enlists the help of two younger women – Abbie, a free-spirited punk artist living as a boarder in the Fields’ home, and Julie, a savvy and provocative teenage neighbor – to help with Jamie’s upbringing. Nothing that his research or science could do could stop this from happening. As he decides to take some time off work and reconnect with the love of music that he shared with his mother finding solace in the music that permeates New Orleans’ French Quarter, he hears the mesmerizing voice of Una Vida (Aunjanue Ellis) for the first time. Rated PG-13.

Lion

Adapted from the non-fiction book A Long Way Home by Saroo Brierley, Lion is about a 5-year-old Indian boy who, after a wrong train takes him thousands of miles away from home and family, survives many challenges before being adopted by an Australian couple. Twenty-five years later, armed with only the scantest of clues, he learns of a new technology called Google Earth, and sets out to find his lost family. Rated PG-13.

La La Land

The Shack

When a young African-American man visits his white girlfriend’s family estate, he becomes ensnared in a more sinister real reason for the invitation. Now that Chris and his girlfriend, Rose, have reached the meet-the-parents milestone of dating, she invites him for a weekend getaway upstate with Missy and Dean. At first, Chris reads the family’s overly accommodating behavior as nervous attempts to deal with their daughter’s interracial relationship, but as the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries lead him to a truth that he could have never imagined.
