MVP 'la-crossed' off Gabbard's list

Bayfield player named Durango's best
Trevor Gabbard and a Durango teammate at DHS lacrosse senior night.

Trevor Gabbard didn't really have to ask a sentry if an outsider could enter the realm.

His known multi-sport athleticism was offered, the now-graduated Bayfield senior was eagerly welcomed and John Robinette's Durango boys' lacrosse squad unquestionably benefited this spring.

His effort with stick and basket was far from, using the sport's common abbreviation, 'LAX.'

Netting a team-best 33 goals during the Demons' 8-7 season, which ended with a loss to verifiably vaunted Colorado Springs Cheyenne Mountain in the 2015 Class 4A State Tournament's opening Round-of-16, Gabbard was recently named one of Durango's Most Valuable Players at the team's year-end recognition banquet.

"It was pretty awesome," Gabbard recalled Wednesday morning via phone, "because all the seniors got it."

Listed primarily as a midfielder, Gabbard also received DHS' Heart & Soul Award before later leaving with even more honors: CHSAA 1st team academic All-State, 1st team All-Mountain (4A/5A) league and honorable mention All-4A.

Gabbard had tied for the team's third-most goals (19) as a junior in '14, in helping the Demons qualify for state-they then lost to Highlands Ranch Valor Christian, this year's runner-up-and post a 10-5 overall record.

"It was awesome," he said of his high-school experience. "I enjoy my sports.kind of sad that it's over."

"But I'll play in the old-man 'rec' league though, I'm sure!"
