Nancy Heleno, founding board president and lead charter application author for Mountain Middle School, recently announced that she started a business as a college essay instructor and will give a talk, “Writing the College Essay,” at 6 p.m. Wednesday, at Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.
Heleno, as leader of a team of local community volunteers, was the first in Colorado to receive unanimous approval from the charter school board; first in Colorado to achieve student lottery status in the first year; first Colorado recipient of additional startup grant funds without request; and first in the nation to be endorsed by the Association for Middle Level Education for the charter. She was also a founding board member of The Liberty School and Animas High School, and a college professor at American University and The College of New Jersey.
