Teen’s death in Mo. a hate crime?
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – An SUV involved in the death of a Missouri teenager outside a Somali community center had an anti-Muslim message displayed in the rear window at the time of the crash, Kansas City police confirmed Saturday.
Authorities said the 34-year-old driver deliberately ran the boy over; they charged him with murder in a case the FBI is investigating as a potential hate crime.
Abdisamad Sheikh-Hussein died at a hospital Thursday evening after his legs nearly were severed in the crash. He was 15.
Obama to pen new profiling guidelines
WASHINGTON – Federal agents who guard the border and screen passengers at airports would be exempt from new racial profiling guidelines that must be observed by the FBI and other law enforcement agencies. The Obama administration is to announce those guidelines in coming days, but officials said the changes would curtail numerous federal agencies from considering factors such as national origin and religion during investigations.
The guidelines apply to federal law enforcement agents but aren’t binding on local police departments, whose officers are more likely to have day-to-day contact with community members. Their formulation also long predates the high-profile cases, such as the police shooting in August in Ferguson, Missouri, that have placed police treatment of minorities in the spotlight.
