Army names 21-year-old Ranger killed in mishap
ATLANTA – The U.S. Army Ranger killed in an apparent parachuting mishap was a 21-year-old veteran from Massachusetts who recently returned from Afghanistan, officials said Saturday.
Pfc. Christopher P. Dona was found dead Thursday with parachute cords and canvas straps from a harness wrapped around his neck after a routine training jump at Fort Stewart in southeast Georgia. It was not immediately clear what caused the fatality. Army authorities are investigating the incident.
An Army spokesman earlier said Dona’s parachute seemed to work normally during the jump. When he landed, wind filled the parachute’s canopy, dragging Dona about 350 feet along the ground. Dona was unconscious by the time fellow soldiers reached him.

Passenger ship reports engine fire: All OK
SEATTLE – A tour ship carrying more than 150 passengers detoured Friday evening to dock at a Seattle marina after fire was reported in an engine compartment as the ship returned from a daylong trip to the San Juan Islands. No injuries were reported.
The 159 passengers aboard the 113-foot Victoria Clipper III catamaran got off safely at Shilshole Marina, Clipper Vacations spokeswoman Janis Smith said. The company sent buses to take the passengers back to the Seattle waterfront pier where they began their trip.
The ship was just off Edmonds, north of Seattle, when a fire was reported in some insulation surrounding one of the turbine engines, Smith said. The crew sealed that compartment and deployed a chemical fire suppression system, then diverted to the nearby marina, she said.

Police say one of the teens who was shot has been released from Vanderbilt University Hospital. The others remain hospitalized in stable condition.
Police have asked for the public’s help in locating Woodley.

Bear with head stuck in jar rescued
JAMISON CITY, Pa. – Four central Pennsylvania residents said they used only a rope and a flashlight during a wild chase to rescue a young bear whose head had been stuck in a plastic jar for at least 11 days.
The frightened but powerful bruin fell into a swimming pool at least twice during the ordeal, according to a report Saturday in the Press Enterprise of Bloomsburg. But the group eventually yanked off the jar and set the animal free.
“I thought, ‘No one is going to believe us,’” said Morgan Laskowski, 22, the bartender at the Jamison City Hotel and a member of the impromptu bear-wrangling team.
Area residents first spotted the 100-pound bruin with its head in a red jar on June 3, but it eluded game wardens. The animal was attracted to the container because it appeared to have once contained cooking oil.
