White House gets this year’s holiday tree
WASHINGTON – First lady Michelle Obama has kicked off the holiday season at the White House by welcoming this year’s Christmas tree.
It’s a Fraser fir grown in Pennsylvania that stands more than 18 feet tall.
The tree is traditionally displayed in the Blue Room of the White House. The first lady says this year’s tree will honor the military.
Two days after President Barack Obama pardoned “Abe” and an alternate turkey named “Honest,” the transition to Christmas was in full throttle Friday at the White House. Workers were busy putting up an array of Christmas trees inside the grounds.
Suspect charged in Chicago boy’s death
CHICAGO – A Chicago man was charged with first-degree murder Friday in connection with the slaying of a 9-year-old boy who police say was lured from a playground and shot in the head because of his father’s gang ties.
Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said the suspect, 27-year-old Corey Morgan, is a gang member with an extensive criminal history.
McCarthy said two other men, including one jailed on an unrelated gun charge, also are suspected in the death of Tyshawn Lee, who was shot in an alley near his grandmother’s home on Nov. 2.
