Police credit student for disarming gunman
SEATTLE – Police say a Seattle Pacific University student on Thursday disarmed a lone gunman who entered a building and shot four people.
A hospital spokeswoman says one man has died and three other people are injured, one critically.
Police say the student building monitor disarmed the gunman as he was reloading. Several students held the gunman until police arrived.
Police say the gunman is under arrest. The Otto Miller building where the afternoon shooting took place has been secured.
Harborview Medical Center spokeswoman Susan Gregg says a man in his 20s has died and a critically injured 20-year-old woman has been taken to surgery. Gregg says a 24-year-old man and a 22-year-old man are in satisfactory condition.
Delaware to test all major bridges in state
WILMINGTON, Del. – Delaware’s transportation secretary ordered immediate inspections of major bridges in the state on Thursday to see if they might have any problems similar to an interstate bypass that had to close in Wilmington.
Meanwhile, the extent of the damage that thousands of cars whizzed past daily before officials realized the bridge was tilting became clear: One of the concrete barriers separating the northbound and southbound lanes popped up 18 inches higher than the other. They are supposed to be the same height.
“This is unbelievable,” Delaware Gov. Jack Markell said during a tour of the Interstate 495 span.
The bridge, which typically carries about 90,000 vehicles daily, has been closed since Monday, snarling traffic on the crucial north-south artery. It will be weeks, perhaps longer, before it reopens.
The federal government authorized an initial $2 million for repairs and pledged to pick up 90 percent of the total tab because the bridge is part of an interstate. The total cost of repairs is not yet known.
Loaded handgun found in toy aisle at Target
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Police are investigating how a loaded gun wound up among children’s toys at a Target store in South Carolina.
According to a police report, an employee at the Myrtle Beach store reported May 30 that he was investigating a possible theft when he noticed a black handgun on top of a superhero toy box.
The employee told officers he had seen a man repeatedly walking around that section of the store, but authorities said they didn’t know if that man had put the gun among the toys.
