PALESTINE, Texas – A 64-year-old woman and four grandchildren were killed early Saturday after a creek overflowed its banks, flooding an East Texas neighborhood as many residents slept.
The deceased were identified as 64-year-old Lenda Asberry and her grandchildren 6-year-old Jamonicka Johnson, 7-year-old Von Anthony Johnson Jr., 8-year-old Devonte Asberry, and 9-year-old Venetia Asberry.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – A judge who said police improperly targeted gay men in sting operations has dismissed charges of lewd conduct and indecent exposure against a man who was arrested in a public bathroom.
Superior Court Judge Halim Dhanidina ruled Friday that Rory Moroney’s arrest in 2014 was based on discriminatory enforcement and prosecution, the Long Beach Press-Telegram reported.
If convicted, Moroney would have been required to register as a sex offender for life.
Moroney, 50, was arrested after a detective acting as a vice unit decoy said he exposed himself in a bathroom at Recreation Park in the Los Angeles suburb.
Moroney said the detective, who smiled, nodded and made eye contact in the restroom, appeared to be interested in sex.
Police said they based lewd-conduct operations on complaints, but the judge said there was little evidence of such complaints at the men’s restrooms where most stings took place.
Bruce Wolf, a self-described “Chicago radio-TV legend,” Friday posted the following tweet:
“Sox in their Freddie Gray road uniforms in Baltimore tonight.”
That is Wolf, who in a 20-plus-year career has worked at a number of Chicago media outlets, making a joke (presumably) about Freddie Gray, the Baltimore man whose death was ruled a homicide by the city’s medical examiner following critical injuries sustained while in police custody.
Wolf’s tweet seems insensitive at best. Friday marked the one-year anniversary of the “Empty Park” game last year when the Orioles were forced to play the White Sox in front of, well, nobody.
Unrest in the city, and directly outside of Camden Yards the day prior, forced officials to postpone two games with the third in the series against Chicago to be played without fans due to a city-wide curfew that would have been violated because of the game’s start time.
NEW YORK – Nearly 4 million Nissan cars are being recalled due to major safety problems where passenger air bags or seat belts could fail in a crash, leading to serious injuries or fatalities.
The two recalls are just the latest in a string of safety problems to hit automakers in the past year with Acura, BMW, Chrysler, Ford, Honda, Lexus, Mazda, Toyota and other manufactures having to recall cars over air bag problems. The Nissan problems are unrelated to the other air bag issues.
Nissan North America, Inc. said that 3.2 million cars may have a problem with a sensor that detects if the front passenger seat is occupied and if that passenger is an adult or a child. Defective sensors might incorrectly think that an adult is a child or classify the seat as empty, thus turning off the air bag.
Nissan will notify owners of the problem and offer to fix it for free, however no schedule has yet been provided for when these notices will go out or how quickly the repairs can be made.
A 29-year-old woman was killed and her passenger was injured after the scooter she was driving was struck by an amphibious sightseeing vehicle in downtown Boston on Saturday.
The crash happened around 11:30 a.m. right near public park Boston Common when the vessel, known as a duck boat, collided with the scooter.
The woman and her male passenger were taken to Massachusetts General Hospital, where the woman died from her injuries, according to Boston police Officer Rachel McGuire. The passenger suffered non-life threatening injuries, McGuire added.
There were about 30 passengers on the duck boat when the crash happened, McGuire said. There were no other injuries.
