Computer outage demands spacewalk at station

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – NASA has ordered spacewalking repairs for a serious computer outage at the International Space Station.

A backup computer for some robotic systems failed Friday. The main computer is fine and the six-man crew is safe, but the malfunction puts this week’s supply run in jeopardy.

Mission managers agreed Saturday a spacewalk is needed to replace the bad computer. But officials want one more day before deciding whether the situation is safe enough in orbit to proceed with Monday’s SpaceX launch as planned.

NASA promised to decide today whether to delay the delivery mission.

No date for the spacewalk has been set yet; officials indicated it could occur sometime in the next week or so.

U.S. Navy christens new destroyer, Zumwalt

BATH, Maine – The U.S. Navy on Saturday christened the first ship of its newest class of destroyers, a more than $3 billion, 610-foot-long warship sporting advanced technology and a stealthy shape designed to minimize its visibility on enemy radar and reduce the size of its crew.

Named after the late Adm. Elmo “Bud” Zumwalt, the newest destroyer’s massive size and angular profile make it stand apart from other U.S. warships. And like its namesake, a reformer who spearheaded changes that helped shape the Navy by offering new opportunities to women and minorities, the Zumwalt will shepherd the fleet into a new era, officials said.

Random vehicles targeted in highway shootings

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Several shootings have targeted apparently random vehicles along a tangle of interstates in south Kansas City.

Police have said 12 of the shootings reported since March 8 are connected but wouldn’t elaborate. Most of the shootings, in which three people have been wounded, are in an area on the city’s south side known both as Three Trails Crossing and the Grandview Triangle, where three interstate highways and U.S. 50 intersect.

While the shootings have some similarities in geography, time of day and circumstances, there is no physical evidence connecting them, Kansas City police spokesman Capt. Tye Grant said.

Judge orders man to hold ‘I AM A BULLY!’ sign

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – A judge has ordered a man convicted of harassing a neighbor and her disabled children to stand on a street corner with a sign saying he is a bully.

Municipal Court Judge Gayle Williams-Byers ordered Edmond Aviv to hold the sign for five hours today. The sign reads: “I AM A BULLY! I pick on children that are disabled, and I am intolerant of those that are different from myself. My actions do not reflect an appreciation for the diverse South Euclid community that I live in.”

The judge also said the sign’s letters must be large enough for the average person to see from 25 feet away.

Aviv pleaded no contest in February to a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct and was sentenced last month, according to court records.
