U.S. drone strike kills IS militant leader
WASHINGTON – A coalition airstrike in Syria has killed a senior Islamic State leader, who has been responsible for moving fighters and weapons from Libya to Syria, the Pentagon said Thursday.
A senior U.S. official said that Tariq bin Tahar al-’Awni al-Harzi, a Tunisian, was killed by a U.S. drone strike and that there were no reports of any civilian casualties in the operation. It was not clear if anyone else was with al-Harzi or if other militants were killed or injured in the strike.
The official was not authorized to discuss the operation publicly so spoke on condition of anonymity.
Pamunkey tribe wins federal recognition
NORFOLK, Va. – The Department of Interior has granted federal recognition to the Pamunkey Indian Tribe, the first in Virginia to receive the designation.
The designation allows federal spending on medical care, housing and education. It also could lead to the tribe seeking a casino through a separate approval process, although the Pamunkey say they have no plans to do so.
Still, the tribe’s application was opposed by MGM Resorts, which is building a casino at the National Harbor outside the nation’s capital in Maryland.
Several members of the Congressional Black Caucus also opposed recognition, saying the tribe had a history of banning interracial marriages with blacks.
