Boeing advises about engine icing problems
WASHINGTON – Boeing is alerting airlines about possible engine icing problems on some of its new planes. It is recommending that planes with a specific General Electric engine avoid flying near thunderstorms that might contain ice crystals.
Boeing spokesman Marc Birtel said Saturday that Boeing issued the advisory after ice crystal formation in some instances diminished engine performance. Airlines with planes affected include United, Japan Airlines, Lufthansa and Air India. Models affected are the 747-8 and the 787, which Boeing Co. calls the Dreamliner.
“To reduce chances of ice crystal conditions, Boeing recommends that operators fly at least 50 nautical miles from thunderstorms that may contain ice crystals,” Boeing said in its statement.

Police: Deli owners stole $1M lottery ticket
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – A Long Island deli owner and his son were charged Saturday with scamming a customer out of a $1 million lottery ticket.
Nassau County police say a 34-year-old man who doesn’t speak English bought the ticket Thursday at the Peninsula Deli & Grocery in Hempstead.
The man scratched off his card, saw that he was a winner and handed it to 26-year-old Karim Jaghab to get his winnings, police said.
The ticket was worth $1 million, but Jaghab gave the man $1,000 in cash and kept the ticket, police said.
The customer became suspicious and went back Friday, police said. They say Jaghab and his 57-year-old father, Nabil Jaghab, the owner of the deli, tried to give him $10,000 and told him not to go to the police, authorities said.
The customer went to police, who determined that he had won the $1 million jackpot.

High school football captain charged with killing lover
BLOOMFIELD, Conn. – A high school football captain has been charged with fatally stabbing his lover with a steak knife after an argument over ending their relationship.
Bloomfield High School student Tarence Mitchell appeared in court Friday to face a murder charge in the death of 27-year-old Ronald Taylor Jr. Mitchell is being held on $1 million bond.
According to court documents, the 18-year-old Mitchell initially told investigators that the pair was attacked by two men wearing hoodies but later confessed to the crime, WFSB-TV reported.
Mitchell told police that the two had a sexual relationship and that Taylor gave him marijuana and alcohol over the last two years, according to court papers. When Mitchell tried to end their relationship at the end of last year, “Taylor posted a picture of him on Facebook that included a blog of bad things about him, including him being a Bloomfield gay football star,” the documents said.
On Thursday, Taylor told Mitchell he was coming over, and Mitchell stuck a knife in his pocket in case he needed to protect himself, the papers said. Mitchell said the attack began when Taylor struck him in the face; Mitchell then stabbed Taylor five times with the knife, which remained in Taylor’s back until he pulled it out himself, the papers said.
