Appeals court suspends states’ voting ID laws

WICHITA, Kan. – A federal appeals court has temporarily suspended an order requiring Kansas and Arizona residents to provide proof of citizenship when registering to vote with a national form.

The 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals granted Thursday the emergency request sought by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission and voting rights groups.

The decision means Kansas and Arizona voters can continue to register to vote using the federal form without having to document their citizenship.

At issue is the order by U.S. District Judge Eric Melgren requiring the agency to immediately modify a federal voter registration form to add instructions for Arizona and Kansas residents about proof-of-citizenship requirements.

U.S. special ops troops to train in Europe

WASHINGTON – About 200 U.S. special operations forces and support staff will be participating in training exercises across Europe, including in the three Baltic nations, in the coming months as part of America’s ongoing effort to reassure allies in the region.

The Pentagon says about 40 special operations forces are now taking part in the two-week Exercise Spring Storm in Estonia. And 140 will participate in Exercise Flaming Sword, which is in Latvia and Lithuania this month and will include forces from the U.S. and seven other nations. A third exercise called Namejs will take place in Latvia.
