Obama won’t back education proposals

WASHINGTON – The Obama administration says it cannot support either the Senate or the House versions of bills being considered this week to update the No Child Left Behind education law.

Cecilia Munoz, director of the White House Domestic Policy Council, says neither bill has sufficient accountability to ensure that all children get the resources they need to succeed.

But she is stopping short of saying President Barack Obama would veto the bipartisan Senate bill.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan says the House bill is a major step backward. The White House has threatened a veto on that legislation.

Emphasizing the need for congressional action, Munoz and Duncan highlighted what they said were large achievement gaps between students at the lowest performing 5 percent of schools and those in all other schools.

Heck to seek seat held by Sen. Reid

CARSON CITY, Nev. – Republican Rep. Joe Heck on Monday entered the race for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Nevada Democrat Harry Reid, setting in motion what could be one of the top Senate races of 2016.

Heck made the announcement in a video posted online, citing his background as a medical doctor in the emergency room and on a tour in Iraq. He talked about the struggles his family endured growing up and having the help of a union and social services when his father was out of work.

“When my father needed emergency surgery, Medicare covered it. That’s why I’ll protect Medicare and Social Security and preserve it for future generations,” Heck said in the three-minute video on his website.
