Mother calls police shooting ‘unjust’

WILMINGTON, Del. – The police shooting of a man in a wheelchair was “unjust,” his mother said Thursday, but authorities described a different scenario, saying the man was pulling a handgun from his waist when officers shot him to death.

The shooting happened on a narrow street in Wilmington on Wednesday around 3 p.m. Officers responded to a 911 call of a man who had shot himself, and when they arrived, 28-year-old Jeremy McDole was “still armed with a handgun,” Police Chief Bobby Cummings said.

Cummings said officers approached McDole and told him to put the weapon down. As McDole was removing the gun from his waist, officers “engaged him.”

Experts question maker of Essure

WASHINGTON – Federal health experts on Thursday questioned the maker of a metallic birth control implant associated with thousands of complaints from women, including long-term pain, bleeding and fatigue.

The Essure implant has been sold for more than a decade and is frequently pitched to women as the only non-surgical option for permanent birth control.

But since 2013, the Food and Drug Administration has received thousands of complaints about the device from women and doctors.

The agency convened a meeting Thursday to have its outside experts review Essure’s safety and effectiveness. The panel’s recommendations are not binding.

Yellen expects Fed to raise rates soon

WASHINGTON – Chair Janet Yellen said Thursday that she expects the Federal Reserve to begin raising interest rates from record lows by the end of the year.

In a lecture at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Yellen said she thought inflation would gradually move up to the Fed’s target rate of 2 percent as unusually low oil prices and other factors prove temporary.

And she suggested that global economic weakness won’t likely be significant enough to dissuade the Fed from raising its key short-term rate from zero by December.
