3 hurt in bus station shooting; shooter dead

RICHMOND, Va. – A gunman shot a Virginia state trooper Thursday at a busy bus terminal in the capital city of Richmond before he was shot dead by two other troopers, police said. Two civilians were hurt, though it was not clear if they had been shot.

The trooper’s injuries were life-threatening, said Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller. The two civilians were expected to survive.

Brendan Hamilton told The Richmond Times-Dispatch he was about to walk into the station when he heard two loud bangs, then saw flashes of light. He told the newspaper he then heard at least five more bangs. People then started to run out of the building, said Hamilton, 28, who was visiting from Baltimore.

California Assembly OKs highest minimum wage in nation

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The California Assembly on Thursday approved a plan that would create the highest statewide minimum wage in the nation of $15 an hour by 2022.

The proposal now moves on to the state Senate for consideration. The state of New York is considering a similar measure.

Gov. Jerry Brown and Democrats who control both legislative chambers hailed the increase as a boon to more than 2 million of California’s poorest workers and an example to the nation as it struggles with a growing gap between rich and poor.

Republicans echoed fears from business owners and economists that the annual increases – eventually tied to inflation – would compound California’s image as hostile to business.

America’s poor can now get cheaper Internet access

WASHINGTON – Federal regulators have approved a historic expansion of subsidies for the poor, fleshing out for the first time a set of Reagan-era discounts on phone service to include home Internet access.

The 3-2 vote by the Federal Communications Commission Thursday will let roughly 40 million Americans on food stamps, Medicaid or other federal assistance register for and use an existing benefit worth $9.25 a month to purchase broadband service, either as part of a voice bundle on cellular or fixed networks, or on a standalone basis with no voice plan attached.

Of those eligible for Lifeline, more than 13 million have no Internet service, according to federal officials.

Police recommend charge against girl at Trump rally

JANESVILLE, Wis. – Investigators are recommending that a 15-year-old girl who was pepper sprayed at a Donald Trump rally be charged with disorderly conduct for punching a man in an altercation captured on video.

The girl told police the man groped her breast. But police said Thursday that they don’t have evidence to support that allegation. Another man wearing a red Trump hat pepper-sprayed the girl moments after the punch.

Police Chief David Moore said Thursday that the man the girl punched doesn’t want to press assault charges. But his department has recommended juvenile authorities charge her with disorderly conduct.
