Enzi wins Wyoming’s Senate GOP primary

CHEYENNE, Wyo. – Wyoming’s Mike Enzi has won the Republican primary election for U.S. Senate, beating four challengers as he seeks a fourth term.

The 70-year-old Enzi says he’s seeking another term because his seniority on several Senate committees serves Wyoming’s interests. His priorities include simplifying the tax code.

Enzi’s most serious challenger had been Liz Cheney, the elder daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney. She had difficulty getting mainstream Republicans to back her candidacy and, citing family health issues, dropped out of the race in January.

Firefighters gain ground on forest fire

OAKHURST, Calif. – Firefighters gained ground Tuesday on a blaze in the foothills near Yosemite National Park, allowing some of the 1,000 people who fled the flames to return to their homes.

Nearly 1 square mile in Madera County had been scorched, revising earlier estimates that it had spanned about twice as much ground, state fire officials said.

Flames erupted Monday near Oakhurst, a community of several thousand, forcing more than 1,000 people to evacuate and thousands more to prepare to leave their homes.
