House approves energy-efficiency bill

WASHINGTON – The House gave final legislative approval to a long-delayed bill to boost energy efficiency, sending the measure to the White House.

The bill was approved Tuesday on a voice vote. It includes incentives to cut energy use in commercial buildings, manufacturing plants and homes.

Senators approved the bill last month, also by voice vote.

The measure, sponsored by Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire and Republican Rob Portman of Ohio, exempts some energy-efficient water heaters from pending Energy Department rules.

Ex-Egyptian president receives prison term

CAIRO – Egypt’s ousted Islamist president, Mohammed Morsi, was convicted of using force against protesters and sentenced to 20 years in prison on Tuesday, the first verdict against him since he was removed by the military nearly two years ago.

The case was the latest in a series of mass trials on a range of charges against Morsi and other members of his Muslim Brotherhood.
