Russia stops using base for air strikes

TEHRAN, Iran – Russia has stopped using an Iranian air base for launching airstrikes on Syria for the time being, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman said Monday, just hours after the Iranian defense minister criticized Moscow for having “kind of show-off and ungentlemanly” attitude by publicizing their actions.

Moscow, which had used the Shahid Nojeh Air Base to refuel its bombers striking Syria at least three times last week, confirmed that all Russian warplanes that were based in Iran have returned to Russia.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi told reporters in Tehran that the Russian airstrikes on militants in Syria were “temporary, based on a Russian request.”

Leaders vow to ‘cleanse’ border

ANKARA, Turkey – Turkey vowed Monday to fight Islamic State militants and to “cleanse” the group from its borders after a suicide bombing at a Kurdish wedding, an attack that came amid recent gains by Syrian Kurdish militia forces against the extremists in Syria.

The bombing Saturday in Gaziantep, near the border with Syria, killed at least 54 people – many of them children. Nearly 70 others were wounded in the attack, the deadliest in Turkey this year. There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but officials said it appeared to be the work of the Islamic State group.

Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu told reporters Monday that Turkey would press ahead with its fight against the Islamic State group inside Turkey and support efforts to remove IS fighters from its borders.

Wisconsin

Ex-officers investigate police shooting

MILWAUKEE – Wisconsin’s attorney general acknowledged Monday that former Milwaukee police officers, now working for the state Department of Justice, are investigating the fatal shooting of a black man by a Milwaukee officer that triggered two nights of violence.

Attorney General Brad Schimel said he doesn’t see a conflict in using former Milwaukee officers in the investigation into the Aug. 13 shooting death of Sylville K. Smith, 23.

State Rep. David Bowen, who grew up in the Sherman Park neighborhood, questioned the use of former Milwaukee officers in the investigation and called for the case to be turned over to the U.S. Justice Department.

Bar brawl leads to digit loss

SAN FRANCISCO – Police are searching for a man who bit off a bartender's finger after being kicked out of a San Francisco bar at closing time.

Officer Carlos Manfredi said Monday that the suspect had been drinking at the bar in the Marina District and tried to go back inside after it closed. When he wasn’t let in, he tried to get in through a small window.

Manfredi said the two fought after the man began kicking the bar door. During the confrontation, the man bit off the bartender’s ring finger.
