Family says surfer lost his leg in shark attack
HONOLULU – Family and friends say 25-year-old Colin Cook lost most of his leg in a shark attack off Oahu’s North Shore.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports relatives identified the victim and confirmed doctors amputated most of his left leg. His hands were injured when he punched the shark before it swam away.
The Honolulu Emergency Medical Services Department says bystanders acted quickly and helped save Cook’s life.
Two Palestinians stab Israelis in two attacks
JERUSALEM – Palestinians carried out two stabbing attacks in Jerusalem on Saturday before being shot dead by police, while another two Palestinians were killed during a violent demonstration near the Gaza border fence, as violence continued to spread following a series of attacks against civilians and soldiers in the past week.
In the first stabbing on Saturday, a 16-year-old Arab attacked two Israelis who were walking from the Old City toward the city center, said police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld.
Police, who saw the men bleeding from stab wounds in their upper bodies and the knife-wielding Palestinian running toward them, opened fire, killing the attacker. The two victims were lightly wounded.
Later, just outside the Old City, another Palestinian stabbed two police officers, one in the neck. Rosenfeld said other police forces opened fire and killed the attacker but also wounded one of their own. Three officers were taken to a hospital, one in serious condition.
North Korea ready for ‘any kind of war’
TOKYO – Kim Jong Un declared on Saturday that North Korea was ready to fight “any kind of war” waged by the United States, as he presided over a huge military parade in the center of Pyongyang to mark the 70th anniversary of the ruling Workers’ Party.
The highly orchestrated event – complete with goose-stepping soldiers, convoys of rocket launchers and missiles, and fighter jets roaring overhead – was the biggest such parade North Korea has ever held, part of Kim’s efforts to bolster his leadership of the world’s most closed and authoritarian state.
“We have stood up against the American imperialists, and we are ready for any kind of war against the United States,” Kim said in a long speech before the parade, his first public address in three years.
Suicide bombings in Chad kill 36 people
N’DJAMENA, Chad – At least five suicide bombers on Saturday targeted a village in Chad that is home to thousands of Nigerians who have fled Islamic extremist violence, killing at least 36 people and wounding about 50 others in what appeared to be coordinated attacks, officials said.
Authorities blamed the extremist Boko Haram group from neighboring Nigeria for staging the attacks in the western village of Baga Sola, according to a communique from government spokesman Hassan Sylla Bakari. It said 41 people had died, including the five suicide bombers who were identified as two women, two children and a man.
Danes OK with zoo’s plan to dissect lion
COPENHAGEN, Denmark – A Danish zoo is planning to publicly dissect a year-old lion that it has killed to avoid inbreeding – a year after another Danish zoo triggered massive online protests for killing a healthy young giraffe, dissecting it and feeding it to lions in front of children.
The Odense Zoo in central Denmark says the healthy young female lion was put down nine months ago because the zoo had too many felines. It said the animal, which has since been kept in a freezer, will be dissected Thursday to coincide with the schools’ fall break.
