Armed officers now in place at jail

FRESNO, Calif. – An armed deputy and an armed correctional officer have been stationed in the lobby of the central California jail where an ex-convict opened fire and critically wounded two unarmed officers, a sheriff's spokesman said Monday.

Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims assigned the armed officers in response to Saturday's shooting of officers Juanita Davila, 51, and Toamalama Scanlan, 40, spokesman Tony Botti said.

Scanlan remained in critical condition and Davila was critical, but stable, he said.

Unarmed officers previously guarded the facility and visitors went through metal detectors leading to secure areas.

Video shows vandals destroying formation

Cellphone video captured a group of people knocking over a popular sandstone rock formation known as the “Duckbill” on an Oregon beach.

Oregon State Parks officials originally said they didn't think the break at the site frequented by tourists was caused by humans.

But the video shot by David Kalas of Portland shows a group of visitors pushing the structure until it crumbled to the ground on August 29 at Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area.

The sandstone pedestal was roughly 7 feet to 10 feet across and located in a fenced off section of the park.

Twin bombings near Kabul kill 24

KABUL, Afghanistan – Twin bombings near the Afghan Defense Ministry killed at least 24 people on Monday, including two security force generals, in an attack claimed by the Taliban.

Public Health Ministry spokesman Ismail Kawasi said another 91 people were wounded in the attack in central Kabul. Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said a district police chief and five other police officers were among those killed.

A Defense Ministry spokesman, Mohammad Radmanish, said the second bombing was caused by a suicide attacker who struck the area of the first blast after security forces gathered there. He said the attack took place as ministry employees were leaving their offices for the day. Senior police investigator Faredoon Obiadi said the suicide attacker was wearing a military uniform

Anti-immigrant protests hit Calais

CALAIS, France – Truckers, farmers, dock workers and merchants angry at the disruption caused by thousands of migrants in their midst in the northern French city of Calais blocked the main access route to Britain on Monday to press authorities to set the date to raze an overcrowded makeshift camp.

The action appeared to pay off and, despite tensions among protesters, blockades were being lifted 12 hours later after the region’s top state official reassured the huge, makeshift camp would be dismantled and funds made available for struggling businesses.

The action blocking a main access route was the first major protest of its kind in the city.
