U.S. detects failed N. Korean launch

WASHINGTON – The U.S. military said Saturday it has detected what's being described as a failed missile launch by North Korea.

The launch occurred near the northwestern city of Kusong, and the missile is presumed to be a Musadan intermediate-range ballistic missile, according to a Defense Department statement.

The military says the launch was attempted at 9:33 p.m. MDT Friday and that the missile didn't pose a threat to North America.

It's the latest in a series of moves by North Korea aimed apparently at displaying a show of force.

As recently as last month, it fired three ballistic missiles off its east coast, timed to get the attention of world leaders including President Barack Obama who were visiting the region for a series of summits.

Kerry: Syria meeting produces no deals

LAUSANNE, Switzerland – U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry says a nine-nation meeting hasn’t agreed on any concrete action to stop the violence in Syria. He says several new ideas are being explored.

Kerry says the meeting Saturday in Switzerland with top diplomats from Russia, Saudi Arabia, Iran and others was candid and constructive. He says some ideas “might be able to shape different approaches” toward a peace process in Syria.

But he’s offering no indication of any immediate steps to respond to what he describes as “the urgency of Aleppo, the urgency of trying to find something that works other than military action.”
