Suspect in police shooting killed after standoff

DALLAS – A man planted pipe bombs outside Dallas’ police headquarters early Saturday before opening fire on the building and officers who tried to stop him, spraying the building and a squad car with bullets during a wild street battle but injuring no one.

After cornering the fleeing suspect’s van in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant in the suburb of Hutchins, a police sniper shot and killed him, police Chief David Brown said.

Authorities said they wouldn’t release the suspect’s identity until a medical examiner had confirmed it. At a news conference before they confirmed his death, Brown said the gunman had identified himself as James Boulware.

Thousands flee violence as Syrians approach IS

AKCAKALE, Turkey –Hundreds of Syrian refugees poured into a Turkish-Syrian border crossing Saturday, fleeing intense fighting as Syrian Kurds closed in on an Islamic State-held town – the only passageway linking Turkey with the extremist group’s stronghold of Raqqa.

Some 13,000 refugees already have crossed into Turkey in the last 10 days, according to the Turkish Foreign Ministry. Hundreds more could be seen Saturday on the Syrian side of the Akcakale border crossing, waiting to cross into Turkey.

The loss of Tal Abyad would be a major blow to the IS group.
