Two bailiffs killed, deputy sheriff injured in Michigan

A gunman killed two bailiffs and injured a deputy sheriff at a county courthouse in St. Joseph, Michigan, authorities said Monday.

“The suspect has been shot and killed,” Sheriff L. Paul Bailey said at a news conference.

Bailey said the incident began after a disturbance shortly before 2:30 p.m.

The Michigan State Police said they responded to the shooting Monday afternoon. Gov. Rick Snyder posted on Twitter at 3:30 p.m. that the state police have “secured the scene at the Berrien County courthouse and started its investigation into the shooting that occurred this afternoon.”

Theresa May will be new UK leader after rival quits

LONDON – Britain is set to get a new prime minister within two days, after a tumultuous two weeks that saw the previous one toppled and several potential replacements felled by political intrigue.

Home Secretary Theresa May became the country’s leader-in-waiting after her sole remaining rival unexpectedly withdrew, saying Britain needs stability amid the uncertainty caused by its vote to leave the European Union.

Prime Minister David Cameron welcomed the development and said he would offer his resignation to Queen Elizabeth II on Wednesday after attending a final session of Prime Minister’s Questions in the House of Commons.

U.S. sending 560 additional troops to Iraq to take Mosul

BAGHDAD – The United States will send 560 more troops to Iraq to transform a freshly retaken air base into a staging hub for the long-awaited battle to recapture Mosul from Islamic State militants, Defense Secretary Ash Carter said Monday. The new American forces should arrive in the coming weeks.

Most of the engineers, logistics personnel, security and communications forces will concentrate on building up Qayara air base, about 40 kilometers south of Mosul. They will assist Iraqi forces planning to encircle and eventually retake the biggest city anywhere that has fallen under IS’ control.

The extremist group captured Mosul in the summer of 2014. It has used the city as a main headquarters since.

Prosecutor recuses himself from Alton Sterling’s case

BATON ROUGE, La. – The district attorney in East Baton Rouge, Louisiana, said Monday that he will recuse himself from the investigation into the death of Alton Sterling, the man fatally shot by police last week outside a convenience store.

Hillar Moore, the prosecutor, said in a report that he came to his decision to have another official oversee the case based on his relationship with the parents of one of the officers involved in the shooting, both veteran members of the Baton Rouge Police Department.

The Justice Department quickly moved last week to take over the investigation into the police officers involved in Sterling’s death, a decision that Moore had said he supported. Baton Rouge Police Chief Carl Dabadie said the two officers are Blane Salamoni, a four-year veteran from a prominent local law enforcement family, and Howie Lake, a three-year veteran of the department.
