Gas prices extend their summer decline

CAMARILLO, Calif. – A national survey says the average price of a gallon of regular gasoline has dropped 2 cents over the last two weeks, to $3.46, bringing the decline to 25 cents over the last 11 weeks.

Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg said Sunday that falling crude oil prices drove the declines, although the drop was more moderate than earlier this summer. If crude prices don’t rise, Lundberg says prices at the pump may fall more as refiners shift to winter-grade gasoline, which costs less to produce.

Baton Rouge, Louisiana, had the lowest price among cities surveyed in the Lower 48 states, with $3.11 a gallon. San Francisco had the highest at $3.88 a gallon.

Ebola outbreak could worsen, Obama says

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama says helping contain the current Ebola outbreak in West Africa is a U.S. national security priority, but it’s going to be a long and difficult task.

He says the American military will be helping set up isolation units and equipment there and providing security for public-health workers flocking in from around the world.

But even then, he says “it’s still going to be months before this problem is controllable in Africa.”

Obama warned that if the virus spreads it could mutate and conceivably reach the United States and become a serious public health issue; but he said “it shouldn’t reach our shores.”

He spoke on Ebola during a wide-ranging interview with NBC, conducted Saturday and broadcast Sunday.
