Murder suspect shot self in sheriff’s office parking lot

KATY, Texas – When a boy’s mother found out he had allegedly shot someone, she argued that he needed to surrender to the police, according to The Houston Chronicle. She drove him to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office around 5:30 Sunday morning.

Instead of surrendering, the teenager stepped out of the car and put a handgun to his head. A deputy who was in the parking lot pulled out his own weapon, ordering the young man to drop the gun. Instead the boy fired a single shot to his own head in front of his mother and the deputy. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition and later died.

The deputy who witnessed the shooting has been placed on administrative leave. The deputy did not fire his weapon during the incident.

The nightmare in Katy, Texas, had begun hours earlier, when the teenager – who has not been identified (Reports have also conflicted about whether the boy is 17 or 18 years old.) – allegedly got into an argument with another man about a girl they were both dating, Harris County sheriff’s Sgt. Cedrick Collier told the Associated Press.

India’s military seizes water canal from protesters

NEW DELHI – The Indian army wrestled control Monday of a canal outside India’s capital from protesters whose blockades and rioting have cut off water in millions of homes for the third straight day.

The unrest was led by a privileged group in India’s society, still stratified by an ancient caste system. The group of farm owners, the Jats, want to be included in a government classification for the socially disadvantaged that would give them access to reserved seats for government jobs and schools.

Schools and businesses across the capital region were closed Monday after days of rioting paralyzed the nearby state of Haryana, leaving a dozen dead and more than 100 injured.

Over the last week, protesters had destroyed businesses and homes, blocked roads, forced the cancellation of more than 1,000 trains and left travelers stranded.

Camille Cosby testifies about husband for first time

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Camille Cosby has faithfully stood by her husband, Bill, for more than half a century, though the glory days of Fat Albert and Dr. Huxtable and the more recent years of lawsuits and criminal charges of aggravated sexual assault.

On Monday, despite a flurry of weekend motions filed by his attorneys to halt the proceedings, the comic legend’s wife was ordered to give testimony about her embattled husband. She was deposed in a lawsuit filed by seven women claiming they were defamed by his representatives after they accused him of sexual assault.

Monday’s deposition, conducted at a Marriott Hotel, is believed to be the first testimony Camille Cosby has given since more than 50 women went public with allegations that Cosby sexually assaulted and in several cases drugged them. The behavior, the women say, spanned decades.

Cosby attorneys argued that she “has had no involvement with the facts of allegations underlying this case” and that her participation will create “an unnecessary media circus and personal security threat that serves no purpose other than to harass and embarrass her.”
