National Collection Week a success for Four Corners

Bryan Welker, aka Sponge Bob Reindeer of Durango, delivers six shoe box gifts that were among 4684 Operation Christmas Child gifts donated in Durango.

The Four Corners collected 4,684 operation Christmas child shoebox gifts for children during National Collection Week, Nov. 14-21, 2016.

More than 60 schools, preschools, day cares, youth groups, college groups, and churches participated along with countless individuals who gave up to 50 boxes each.

Toys, school supplies, toiletries, clothing items, and letters of love for children experiencing poverty, war, disease, and natural disasters were inside the shoeboxes.

More than 100 volunteers helped collect boxes at Relay Centers in Durango, Cortez, Bayfield, Pagosa Springs, Farmington, and Bloomfield, New Mexico. Collections also came from surrounding towns such as Dolores, Ignacio, Hermosa, Mancos, Lewis, Montrose, Cahone, Walsenburg, Dulce, New Mexico; Chinle, Arizona; Aztec, Flora Vista, New Mexico; La Plata, New Mexico; Cuba, New Mexico; and Kirtland, New Mexico.

All of the shoeboxes were delivered to the Four Corners Collection Center at the First United Methodist Church, 2917 Aspen Drive. They were shipped to Denver, joining boxes collected from 10 other states.
