National Weather Service offering storm spotter training

Lightning strikes are a leading cause of outdoor deaths in Colorado. Residents can learn more about spotting dangerous weather during training offered next week by the National Weather Service.

For those interested in severe weather, a free Storm Spotter Training class will be provided by the National Weather Service and sponsored by your County Office of Emergency Management and CSU Extension office.

The classes will be taught by NWS staff at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 11 at the Archuleta County Extension Office at 344 Highway 84, at the Archuleta County Fairgrounds in Pagosa Springs.

The next class is at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 12 at the La Plata County Fairgrounds in the county extension building at 2500 Main Ave. in Durango.

Basic storm spotter training starts at 6 p.m. and lasts about two hours. In Durango, an optional one-hour advanced training will follow basic training.
