Ryan Nava is making up for lost time.
He started his wrestling season late for Bayfield High School and is hitting his stride near the end.
Nava finished first in the 120-pound divison at the Sand Devil Classic in Page, Ariz., on Saturday, while also being named the tournament’s most outstanding wrestler for the lower weights.
“He was the star of the weekend,” BHS head coach Todd McMenimen said.
BHS placed the other two wrestlers it had in the semifinals, as well: Cody Speece finished sixth at 113 pounds; Colter McMenimen lost his semifinal match at 138 pounds but finished third in his weight class.
“He’s continuing to improve every time out,” McMenimen said of Speece. “I’m real pleased with where we’re at with him.”
Gus Roberts and Taylor Winch both lost their first consolation matches and didn’t place.
BHS will return to the mat at 6 p.m. Thursday for a dual against Durango and also will dual Ignacio at 6 p.m. Friday.
“We know it’s tough to win the dual because of numbers, but what we can do is win the six matches that we have,” coach McMenimen said.
