Update: Navajo Code Talker John Kinsel will not appear at Shiprock Marathon

The 40th annual Shiprock Marathon will be run May 5 and 6 beginning at Shiprock Youth Center, 4198 U.S. Highway 491.

Ronald Kinsel, son of Navajo Code talker John Kinsel Sr., confirmed Thursday that his father no longer plans to appear at Shiprock Marathon. Ronald told The Journal that his father is no longer up to attending public events.

The race will offer three distances: 5K, half marathon and full marathon.

The 5K trail race will begin at 6 p.m. Friday, May 5, on the Blueberry Hill course, which begins and ends at Shiprock Youth Center. Plaque and/or medal awards will be awarded for overall and age-group top finishers.

The half marathon will begin at 7:30 a.m. and the marathon will begin at 7 a.m. Saturday, May 6. Both courses are out-and-back routes along Highway 491 and Navajo Route 13.

Packet pickup will take place from 2 to 7 p.m. May 5 and from 6 to 6:45 a.m. May 6 in the large parking lot of Shiprock Youth Center.

Shiprock Marathon is a USATF Certified Course.

Runners will receive a performance T-shirt and post-race snacks. The post-race party and awards ceremony will include live music, food and awards at the finish line.
