Navajo State Park invites the public to free events this weekend.
From 8 a.m. to noon on Sunday, July 2 there will be a free kids fishing derby. Registration and check in will take place at the amphitheater. At this time participants will be entered into a drawing for prizes. Ages 15 and under can participate with an adult chaperon. No fishing license is required for children participating.
Children should bring their own fishing pole and tackle, bait will be provided and a limited number of free rental poles will be available. Volunteers will be available to help measure fish. Fishing will be from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.
Speaker and prize drawing will begin at 10:30 a.m. A free hot dog lunch will follow for the participants and their families. To pre-register or for questions contact Megan at Navajo State Park at 883-2208
Other activities this weekend include a water balloon fight at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the pavilion next to the visitor center.
An archery class is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday at the amphitheater. The class is for ages six and up, from beginners to anyone who wants to sharpen his or her archery skills.
These programs are free with the purchase of a $7 daily pass per vehicle or an annual pass for $70. All materials and gear will be provided.
Navajo State Park, located along Colorado High 151 southwest of Pagosa Springs, offers more than 130 campsites and three cabins are available for rent.
